We sent 65 CBD products to a lab to test them for accuracy and honesty. We also did an extensive background check on each company.

Using the results, we selected the best CBD product for eight different categories.

Our reviews and lab test are independent—we have no affiliation with the CBD companies reviewed. Check out our industry report to learn more about how we analyzed these products. You can also take a peek at our FAQ page for the basics about different CBD products and how to best absorb them.

1.     Best value and best CBD company (our top pick)

Bluebird Botanicals

Image of Bluebird botanicals in the woods

Bluebird Botanicals is the best all-around CBD company by a longshot. The CBD industry went through an identity crisis a while back. Many CBD companies removed the word “CBD” from their labels to advertise and sell in marketplaces that allowed “hemp” products, but specifically banned products that mentioned “CBD” or “THC.” Bluebird Botanicals did the opposite. It pioneered CBD transparency.

Bluebird Botanicals was one of the first companies to provide third-party test results of each cannabinoid in its product. Each product has a batch number that is easy to find on its website, which also shows safety tests for pesticide, heavy metal, and microbial levels. We’ve now tested multiple Bluebird products and have found that the company is accurate and reliable. While other companies have followed in its footsteps, our extensive investigation found that many CBD companies provide false or inaccurate test results.

Bluebird’s prices are among the best. Its full-spectrum extract is one of the most potent extracts, which includes a variety of rare cannabinoids. Its THC-free CBD is also exceptional. The company gives massive discounts to disabled, low-income, and veteran customers as well. Most importantly, Bluebird Botanicals has established itself as a company you can trust with numerous awards, certifications, and positive results from independent investigations.

2.     Best CBD deal (cheap, cheap, cheap)

Lazarus Naturals

Lazarus Naturals 750 mg bottle on beach for review

Lazarus Naturals is hands down the best deal for a full-spectrum hemp extract. Our lab tests found that it had accurate levels of CBD and contained high levels of rare cannabinoids such as CBC and CBG. It also had over 2 mg of THC per 1 mL serving, which is fantastic for pain relief. However, if you’re sensitive to THC or don’t want to risk psychoactive effects (“high”), you should choose a CBD oil with less THC.

Lazarus Naturals also gives veterans, disabled, and low-income individuals up to 60% off. I don’t know how the company can afford to offer hemp extract this cheap. The starting price for the CBD oil that we purchased was only $32 and our lab tests found that it came in at 4 cents per mg of CBD. Out of over 60 products that we sent to the lab, Lazarus was the cheapest. Plus, it was accurate and came with high levels of other rarer cannabinoids.

3.     Best pure CBD

Medterra

Medterra made CBD history when CVS agreed to sell its product nationwide. There’s a big reason why CVS chose Medterra over every other CBD company. Medterra only offers pure CBD products. Our lab tests confirmed that Medterra contained CBD and no other cannabinoids.

Medterra is an excellent option for people who want a product that’s pure CBD. There’s no THC in this product, there’s no chance of accidentally getting a product with THC, and nobody will question if this product contains THC. It looks and feels like a pharmaceutical grade product, which you can pop into CVS and buy.

4.     Most trustworthy company that also sells CBD

Barlean’s

Barleans Ideal CBD 1125 mg

Barlean’s has the best CBD values for any household brand name. Not everyone wants to risk purchasing CBD from a new company. Heck, half the CBD companies on the market are less than a year old.

Barlean’s has a long history of satisfied customers and awards that spans over a 30-year history. It is one of the first mainstream brands to offer CBD that is certified USDA Organic. Our lab tests confirmed that its full-spectrum hemp extract is potent and full of rare cannabinoids. The price per CBD milligram is under 6 cents, which is excellent.

5.     Best CBD on Amazon

R+R Medicinals

Amazon does not allow for the sale of CBD products. However, you can search for thousands of products on Amazon that suggest that they contain CBD. Amazon even has a page for top CBD oils. To sell CBD on Amazon, companies need to remove the word “CBD” and “THC” from their label and marketing material. The need to hide the word “CBD” on Amazon has created a marketplace where people don’t know whether the product they want to buy contains CBD.

We lab test products and tell you how transparent companies are. You can’t be transparent and sell CBD products on Amazon, which means that any CBD product sold on Amazon will get negative marks from our website. That being said, we were impressed by Amazon’s R+R Medicinals.

We found that the 1,000 mg R+R Medicinals product contained 1,070 mg of CBD and was rich in CBC and CBG. It also had over 63 mg of THC. The ratings are excellent, the price is excellent, and it has a potency and variety of cannabinoids that are stellar.

6.     Best environmentally sustainable company that also sells CBD

Gaia Herbs

Gaia Herbs is a certified B corporation, which is an environmentally sustainable and transparent company. It was established in 1987 and is now a leading brand of botanical supplements. It has won over 50 awards. Gaia Herbs operates an organic USDA-certified farm and is a global leader in herbal analysis and education. It is a bit pricey, but no one comes close to its combination of environmental sustainability, trust, and accuracy.

7.     Leader of the CBD industry

Charlotte’s Web

Charlottes Web Mint Full Strength CBD bottle on rock for review
Charlottes web extra strength CBD on beach for review

Charlotte’s Web leads the market in hemp-derived CBD products. In fact, it is arguably the most influential CBD company with thousands of fans. It also played a significant role in the legalization of hemp. Charlotte’s Web was made famous for treating the life-threatening epilepsy of a girl named Charlotte Figi. A case study and documentary of Charlotte’s success spread like wildfire.

CBD Examine’s review of Charlotte’s Web was negative because the product we reviewed listed the milligrams on the front as “hemp extract,” which may be confused with cannabinoid or CBD levels. At the time, Charlotte’s Web didn’t have transparent labeling of CBD levels and many customers thought they were purchasing more CBD than they were. In fairness, Charlotte’s Web was under heavy scrutiny that made it difficult to sell and market products with CBD and THC. Charlotte’s Web has since updated its label to be more transparent.

CBD Examine focuses on the transparency and labeling of cannabinoid levels. That’s what we do. However, it’s important to note that CBD products may not have become legal if Charlotte’s Web didn’t find creative ways to label and market its product. The combination of its popularity, money-back-guarantee, marketing, growth, and political influence helped make hemp federally legal in 2018.

8.     Best CBD for epilepsy or neurological conditions

Charlotte’s Web

Charlottes Web Mint Full Strength CBD bottle on rock for review
Charlottes web extra strength CBD on beach for review

Charlotte’s Web is the most popular brand for treating epilepsy. Palmetto Harmony and Haleigh’s Hope also have customers who champion their anti-seizure effects. People probably thought, well, if it also works for seizures, maybe it’ll work for pain or sleep. These brands have also become famous for helping people with neurological disorders and all the other reasons that people recommend CBD.

Our testing found that the brands popular for seizures are full-spectrum. They contain CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids. Most notably, all three brands contained decent amounts of CBC and CBG.

If the above brands work for you, it’s likely products from Bluebird Botanicals or Lazarus Naturals would also work because they contain higher levels of these cannabinoids and at a discounted price. That’s just a hunch. CBC and CBG need more research. It’s important to note that only pure CBD from a pharmaceutical company is FDA approved to treat epilepsy. There isn’t enough research to recommend any hemp extract for treating any disease.
