We purchased this CBD product and tested it at independent testing facilities to measure levels of CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids and compare the results to the manufacturer's claims. Here are the results. (Learn more about our review process.)
The unadulterated test results on this page come directly from these certificates of analysis from two independent labs, which we pay directly. These are two independent lab tests of one product, at one point in time. We do not guarantee that all products or labs will produce the same results. Lab results may differ based on the different methodologies of testing used by each lab or inconsistencies in the product. Added ingredients may affect lab results. Volume of creams and edibles may change due to factors such as temperature, and this may impact lab results. Learn more about our review process.
Bluebird Botanicals claims to have 1250+ mg of CBD per 6 oz. bottle (177 mL). Lab B estimates that this bottle contains 169.185 grams or 0.96 grams per milliliter (a gram is basically a milliliter here). Lab B found each gram contains 9.36 mg of CBD, 0.37 of THC, 0.3 mg of CBC, and trace levels of other cannabinoids.
Size of 1 mL for reference:
*It's common to see oral CBD doses at 5 mg, 15 mg, 25 mg, and 50 mg for consumer products. Researchers use much larger doses (25 mg to 1500 mg of CBD). CBD dosing is highly individualized and much less is known about topical CBD doses.
The package quantity in grams is 169.185, based on a g/ml conversion factor of 0.95585 reported by Lab B.
DISCLAIMER: The lab results will not be exact. Bluebird Botanicals’ claims were in milliliters. Both our independent labs reported cannabinoid levels in grams, which were converted from grams to milliliters in order to compare against the company's claims. The results may be slightly off because measuring units in volume can change based on temperature, settling, foam, air pockets, etc. Creams with additional ingredients may also affect lab results. Also, Bluebird has a "+" on the front label to indicate that this lotion contains more CBD than listed (1250+ mg), which technically makes them accurate even at a CBD amount over 1250 milligrams.
Bluebird Botanicals claims this is a full-spectrum hemp lotion, which should include CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids. Our lab tests confirmed a full-spectrum hemp extract that contains CBD, THC, CBC, and trace levels of additional cannabinoids.
We found that Bluebird Botanicals contained 27% to 34% more cannabinoids than suggested by their label. However, Bluebird’s label has a plus on the front label to indicate that it contains more CBD than listed (1250+ mg CBD) and they provide a lab test for exact amounts. Bluebird’s lab results are nearly identical to the results of our Lab B. They are exceptionally accurate.
Suggested use: Generously massage a moderate amount into target areas twice daily or as needed.
Bluebird Botanicals is currently #1 on my Best CBD Oils list. They were a pioneer of CBD transparency. Their prices are excellent. They have numerous awards, certifications and have been third-party tested by many organizations. I've tested at least 6 of their products and they all passed with flying colors. They are one of the few companies to earn my CBD Examine Authenticity Award. Read more about Bluebird Botanicals here.
Bluebird, I'm not too fond of the way you smell, but you know where my heart is. 3.6 cents per milligram of CBD is fantastically cheap. This is a full-spectrum hemp extract with natural ingredients from a company that built CBD transparency and pushed for the legalization of CBD. This level of trust is hard to find at any price tag. You had me at 3.6 cents.
Aroma is subjective. Don't put my opinion on a pedestal because we all like different smells. Bluebird's Hemp Sport doesn’t smell great to me. It’s a little earthy and you can still smell the hemp extract in there. It’s subtle, but the hemp extract is there. After about a minute, the pungent odor of hemp is gone and all I’m left with is a slight menthol aroma and a little bit of something natural, perhaps the ginger or arnica (pine-sage) aroma. After about five minutes, it smells a little sweet, a little menthol, and maybe I still smell the ginger. It ends up smelling nice, but it’s not my cup of tea. My wife enjoys this one. This is my wife's favorite CBD cream and she hates my favorite CBD topical. Again, it's all subjective.
This Hemp Sport smells refreshing after about five minutes, but I don't like the earthy natural smell leading up to that refreshing smell. However, this is great for what it is. This is an excellent full-spectrum hemp extract with natural ingredients. Most companies make CBD creams that smell good because they remove all the other cannabinoids and use additives or heavy doses of menthol to mask the hemp smell. This hemp cream is natural and Bluebird Botanicals is famous for natural, honest hemp products.
It’s 9 or 10 mg of CBD per gram, about 0.3 mg of THC per gram, about 0.3 mg of CBC per gram and it has trace levels of other cannabinoids per gram. Lab B estimates that this 177 mL (6 oz.) bottle has 169 grams, so it's about a gram per milliliter. So, you get 177 squirts out of this bottle with about 10 mg of CBD each. Each squirt is about the size of a quarter and can spread over a large area.
Not a lot is known about topical CBD doses. This 10 mg CBD dose is a more potent dose than most topical products. Many products have half this amount of CBD, some have 15 mg per gram, and others have even more. The 0.3 mg of THC may add some additional benefits to the CBD. Topical THC does not pass into the blood, according to current research. This has a lot more CBC than most topical products and the trace amounts of other cannabinoids may help increase the effects of CBD too, but who knows.
Bluebird feels unusually warm and soothing after applying. I think it may be the ginger, which others have described with a warm sensation because I haven't felt this type of heat from other hemp extracts. Early research shows that topical ginger dramatically helps with arthritis but more extensive studies are needed. Ginger may also be suitable for anti-aging creams because of anti-inflammatory effects. Menthol and arnica are common ingredients in topical relief creams.
As always, I don’t talk about the effects on me personally because it can be misleading. CBD dosing is highly individualized and you’ll need to look at the ingredients and cannabinoid levels to find one you like. The added natural ingredients in Bluebird Botanicals are popular and have research to back them up.
The look is nothing special. It’s a slightly brown and yellowish cream color. The cream is heavy and a little bit goes a long way. The logo and design are nice, but the bottle looks like any sunscreen-type of bottle you might see at the grocery store. I do like that the bottle has a "bioplastic 100% recyclable" stamp and a "low carbon footprint" stamp as well.
This is a tremendous full-spectrum hemp extract (multiple cannabinoids) from a CBD company like no other. Bluebird pioneered CBD transparency. If every company were like them, I wouldn't need to send CBD products to a lab to ensure that you don't get screwed. This is a natural CBD product with natural ingredients and no artificial fragrances. It comes with some of the raw smell of hemp and that's not for everybody. It's not for me. I use old spice deodorant, which is far from natural. However, Bluebird also comes with the cannabinoids and natural ingredients that people love. If you want a powerful, natural, CBD topical from my favorite CBD company, this is for you.
Bluebird Botanicals offers several different types of hemp extract: Classic, Complete, THC-free, and Signature at 1x or 6x strength. They also offer hemp capsules, CBD isolate, CBD vape oil, CBD pet products, hemp extract in bulk, and CBD topicals.
